The Bus Stops Here, Border Conflict Stops Belizean Tour Guides at the Border

Submitted by on Monday, 11 May 2009No Comment

The Belize/ Guatemala border dispute has taken another twist this week. Recent reports from the frontier are that because of retaliatory actions on both sides of the border Belizean tour guides can no longer take tours into Guatemala.  Obviously, this is affecting the bottom line of many a tour guide and operator.  This week Minister of Transport Mevlin Hulse was forced to respond.

Apparently, the move to stop Belizean tour guides at the border by the Guatemalans was as a tit for tat— They are upset that Belize recently implemented more regulations on how buses from Guatemala can operate on our side of the border.

The minister claims: “they (the Guates) are comfortable communicating with me and I talk to them and we both realize that we need to work this out. It does not have to happen in a quarrel some antagonistic manner. We are getting there; there are bumps on the road.”
