AIDS in Belize. One Priest’s Fight to Stem the Disease.

Submitted by on Monday, 1 June 2009No Comment

Continuing in our attempt to educate the Belizeans to the threat that Belize is now facing from AIDS we came across this excellent video about a Father Dominic. He is a British Catholic priest who is working Dangriga to fight the stem of AIDS among the Garifuna.

Father Dominic is doing his best to engage the locals in an open dialogue concerning the disease. We commend his work and encourage all to watch this video

As a woman in the video says, ” I don’t know why they don’t use condoms. It is not a sin to use it.”

This is interesting, especially following Pope Benedict’s comments during his recent trip to Africa in which he claimed that condom use actually “aggravated“the AIDS epidemic.

Belize may be a third world country, but there is no need for us to have the highest AIDS infection rate in the Latin America. We are well educated people, now it’s time for us to start be smart.

The video claims that there is a high rate of sex workers in Belize’s bigger cities. Father Dominic working PASMO went to the local bars and brothels to educate the sex workers.

As he said, “we have to do something about it, we can’t just wait till they die and we bury them.”
