There is a sad ending to report tonight in the story of Cenaida Raymundo. She is the young mother who was forced to deliver her baby on her own in the Punta Gorda Town Hospital last week Tuesday. Well exactly one week after he was born – the 4 and a half pound baby boy died around 9 last night at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. Cenaida told us yesterday that while giving birth in the PG hospital she was screaming for help but no one rushed to her aid.

The baby was strangled with the umbilical cord and an ultrasound showed that he had been brain damaged. He was on a ventilator at the KHMH since Saturday. He died last night and if all that Cenaida had been through wasn’t enough, KHMH staff told her that they are unable to transport the baby back to Punta Gorda. That is standard policy but for the young mother already wronged by the public health system – it added insult to her injury. She told us about her baby’s final moments last night.

Cenaida Raymundo, Mother
“The doctor came and checked the baby and said, ‘I don’t know, I am being sincere to you, I don’t know if the baby will make it tonight.’ I was right there all the time because I knew the baby would die. I knew the baby would die since the beginning when they took him to Dangriga. When the baby died, it was really hard for me because I couldn’t have my husband here because he is in PG watching our child on the farm. Lucky for me I have my mother in law here and she is helping me a lot.

But now I am asking you to tell the government that this is not staying like this, I want to sue them for what happened to my child because this is my second child and I really love my child and he died now and I can’t do nothing to bring him to life. And even if I bring him to life and if he survived, he would have suffered for the rest of his life. But you know what, I want them to be sued. Everybody is advising me to sue them, I didn’t want to sue them but then to what I understand they said this happens all the time and it just blows off one week after.

I know what’s going on right now with my heart, I am feeling bad, and I now don’t want another mother to suffer the same thing as me and my husband is suffering just as much as me right now and we want justice.”
