Caye Caulker Residents in Uproar Over “Legal” Slaughter of Dogs on the Island

The Caye Caulker Town Council has again taken to poisoning its stray dog population. If that news was not horrific enough, Belize News Post has learned that many of slaughtered are in fact not strays but pets with loving homes.

Caye Caulker Belize Stray Dog

The Caye Caulker community is an uproar this week as their dogs are being horrifically poisoned again, many of them with out cause. From the Caye Caulker Forums

Animal lovers beware the description below is horrific.

Cooper had this to say:

Most of us had no idea the poisoning of the island dogs was planned for last Tuesday June 2nd. It was not posted. It was on channel 6 but not many folks watch that channel. I had not heard of any packs causing problems etc.
We lost a lot of very sweet, very well taken care of dogs that night. Most of these dogs all had their shots, had been spayed and neutered, were being fed and were taking their heart-worm meds.
Whitey, Digger, Bambi ….
I understand the need to control the number of animals in a small area, but to just throw poisoned meat out… animals were still dying late Wed afternoon the day after the official poisonings. This is not official, but I was told 30 dogs were poisoned.

We found Bambi at noon the day after she was poised.

She was sweetest dog you could ever see. Timid and shy, she was being adopted by a Canadian family. She spent most of her time at the sportsbar. They would usually bring her in a night but that night she was not brought in. She must have eaten of the poisoned meat. The poison took about 3 hours to kill her, even though we got her to a vet on the island.

This is what usually happens when a dog is poisoned: the dog has continuous seizures as its internal organs are eaten up. The dog starts urinating blood, bleeding from the ears…it is horrific to watch…

Outraged Caye Caulker residents are taking action and asking for your support. Below is a link to the petition they have started and a couple emails for the Caye Caulker Village Council and the Ministry of Health.
