Belize recalls ambassador from Honduras.

Submitted by on Monday, 6 July 2009No Comment

The GOB has has recalled its ambassador to Honduras after the military overthrew President Manuel Zelaya hours before the country voted in a controversial referendum on Sunday.

This move comes in keeping with the Central American Integration System’s (SICA) recommendation that member countries withdraw ambassadors as a show of solidarity with Zelaya.

Mr. Zelaya was removed from power via a military coup after he pushed for a referendum that would have allowed him to change the constitution to allow him to run for re-election past a single four-year term.

Ambassador Martinez said that another decision taken by SICA countries is to suspend the disbursement of loans or other financial transactions to Honduras.

“What Belize is particularly concerned about is the level of confrontational speech that has come from some countries in the region where they stated that he (Zelaya) must be reinstated now and by force and put him back in etcetera.

“That is not going to solve the issue. You cannot talk about going in there and shaking down people and jailing people for having done something they felt was correct because this is not an ordinary military coup,” he added.

Both the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) have condemned the coup with the OAS giving the new leaders three days to restore democratic rule or face the possible suspension from the hemispheric body.
