Barrow: Belizean Crime “very disturbing”
In an interview with Stabroek News, Dean Barrow addressed Belize’s huge crime problem.
Barrow said that the murder rate in Belize was ” very disturbing.”
He blamed the “usual suspects” such as social deterioration, economic problems and Belize’s vulnerability to drug trafficking.
His solution was to learn from the “experience of Caricom” to tackle the problem, even though he admits that the situation is “absolutely terrible.”
Barrow also stressed that Belize is part of the Merida Initiative– a security initiative between the US government and Mexico and Central America aimed at combating the drug trade.
Thus in summary, Barrow had no concrete plans of his own to combat the crime epidemic that is crippling the country. Rather, he will wait for the international community to spoon feed him techniques that may have no bearing on the actual situation in Belize.
Although the situation is “very disturbing” no concrete actions are to be expected just more forums and trips to some nation or another’s capital where so called experts can share “experiences.”

What would you have Mr. Barrow say when the USA has tried and failed for decades to curb the drug trafficing? Easy for you to write negative attitude against Mr. Barrow but what would YOU do?
We are all concerned aren't we. I agree that Bze News Post was being a little critical, but really can our leader but the onus for change on foreigners. What kind of colonialist mentality is that. I for one would like to hear that Mr. Barrow has come up with some homegrown ideas for protecting Belizeans. As "Concerned Too" says, the US "has tried and failed" to combat their drug problem, so why should we wait for a Merida Accord or any other accord?
