Belizean Bread Pudding – A Comforting and Delicious Dessert
This bread pudding recipe from Belize has a sweet, elegant flavor with a custard-like texture toward the bottom and a crisper texture toward the top. We love this recipe for its simplicity of ingredients and delicious flavor! Bread pudding is great served hot. For an extra special presentation try serving with some evaporated milk and a sprinkling of Belizean brown sugar.
Bread Pudding Recipe Ingredients
Ingredients:
- 1 pack of Belizean white bread, sliced
- 2 cups of sugar
- 3 large eggs
- 3 teaspoons of vanilla extract (or other flavorings)
- 1 teaspoon of ground nutmeg
- ½ bar of Blue Bonnet butter (or equivalent)
- 4-5 cups of water (enough to thoroughly soak the bread)
- ½ cup of evaporated milk
Optional Ingredients:
- ½ cup of rum
- Raisins, craisins, fruit cocktail, or pineapple tidbits to taste
Bread Pudding Recipe Instructions:
- Preparation: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking pan (Amazon) with a little butter or non-stick cooking spray.
- Bread Preparation: Tear the Belizean white bread into small pieces with your hands and place them in a large mixing bowl.
- Soaking the Bread: Pour enough water over the bread to completely soak it (approximately 4-5 cups). Ensure that all the bread is thoroughly wet.
- Adding Ingredients: To the soaked bread, add sugar, eggs, vanilla extract (Amazon), nutmeg (Amazon), and butter. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly distributed. If you’re using any optional ingredients like rum or dried fruits, add them at this stage and mix.
- Creating the Mixture: The mixture should have a very soupy consistency.
- Baking: Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish. Bake in the preheated oven for about 1 hour and 30 minutes, or until the pudding is set and the top is golden brown.
- Broiling for Crispiness: For a crispy and browned top, broil the pudding for an additional 5 minutes. Keep a close watch during this step to prevent burning.
- Cooling: Allow the bread pudding to cool slightly before serving.
Serving Suggestion: Serve warm or at room temperature, perhaps with a scoop of ice cream or a drizzle of caramel sauce for an extra treat.
Note: The Belize bread pudding can be stored in the refrigerator for a few days. Reheat in the oven or microwave before serving or enjoy at room temperature. You can’t go wrong. Enjoy this Belizean Bread Pudding with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of caramel sauce for an extra indulgent treat.
This bread pudding recipe in Belize is served across occasions from school lunches to birthday parties. It’s one of those desserts found across Belize and is always a treat. Commonly you will find small rectangles of bread pudding in plastic wrap anywhere from the local restaurant to the gas station snack bar. Growing up in Belize we would buy or make fresh bread daily. Belizean bread has no preservatives so within a few days it gets moldy. Belizean bread pudding is a great way to transform stale bread into a delicious treat.
