  • Preparation Time: 20 minutes
  • Cooking Time: 20-40 minutes (depending on loaf size)
  • Servings: 8-10

Pan de Muerto Recipe Ingredients:

For the Dough:

  • 5 cups all-purpose unbleached flour (plus 1 cup for kneading)
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 cup milk or water
  • 1 stick butter/margarine
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • About ten drops of yellow food coloring enhances the color but does not change the flavor

Flavor (Choose One):

Glaze Options:

Option 1:

  • ½ cup sugar
  • ½ cup orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest

Option 2:

  • ½ stick of melted butter or softened butter
  • White sugar for dusting

Option 3:

  • 1 beaten egg mixed with 1 tablespoon milk
  • White sugar for sprinkling

Pan de Muerto Recipe Instructions:

  1. Preparing the Dough: In a saucepan, gently heat the milk or water with butter until warm. Transfer to a large bowl and add the remaining dough ingredients. Mix until you achieve a sticky consistency.
  2. For kneading, you can either use a mixer with dough hooks or knead by hand on a floured counter. Knead for about ten minutes until the dough becomes soft and stretchy.
  3. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm spot until doubled in size (approximately 60 to 90 minutes).
  4. Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into 10 equal parts. Shape 8 into round balls and place them on a cookie sheet, slightly flattening each.
  5. For the decorative “bones,” divide the remaining dough into 16 pieces. Roll each into a log and create two indentations using your three middle fingers. Crisscross these logs on top of the round dough balls, using a bit of water or milk to help them stick.
  6. Allow the decorated dough balls to rise again until doubled in size (around 30 minutes).
  7. Bake at 350°F for 20-30 minutes until golden brown. If making larger loaves, adjust the baking time accordingly.
  8. Once baked, choose a glaze option and apply as desired.

Serving Suggestions:

Pan de Muerto is traditionally enjoyed with a hot cup of chocolate or coffee. It’s a comforting treat that evokes memories and traditions.

Tips & Tricks:

  • The key to a perfect Pan de Muerto is patience during the rising process. Ensure the dough has doubled in size for the best texture.
  • If your kitchen is cold, consider placing the dough in an oven (turned off) with a bowl of hot water to help it rise.
