Belizean Dinner Rolls Recipe Ingredients:

  • 240 ml (1 cup) warm milk (43°C/110°F)
  • 100 g (1 cup) shredded cheese (cheddar, Gouda, Swiss, or Parmesan)
  • 500 g (4 cups) bread flour, plus 30 g (¼ cup) for kneading
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 package)
  • 2 eggs, room temperature
  • 113 g (1 stick) butter or margarine
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 80 ml (⅓ cup) sugar

Alternative Ingredient Options:

  • Dairy-free: Use plant-based milk and vegan cheese.
  • Gluten-free: Replace with gluten-free flour blend.

Instructions:

  1. Mix shredded cheese with warm milk in a large bowl. The milk should be hot enough to melt the cheese but do not add the yeast until the milk is cooled to room temperature.
  2. Sprinkle yeast and 1 teaspoon of sugar on the milk-cheese mixture, mixing lightly. Wait for the yeast to activate and foam. Remember if you add the yeast too soon it will be killed by the heat of the milk and cheese mixture.
  3. Add the remaining sugar, eggs, salt, and half the flour to the bowl. Mix thoroughly.
  4. Gradually incorporate the remaining flour into the dough. Knead until smooth and slightly sticky.
  5. Let the dough rise in a covered, oiled bowl for 1 hour or overnight in the refrigerator.
  6. After rising, deflate the dough and divide it into 16 pieces on a floured surface.
  7. Place dough balls in a 9×13-inch baking pan, leaving space between each.
  8. Allow the dough balls to rise again for about 30 minutes or until doubled.
  9. Preheat the oven to 175°C (350°F).
  10. Brush the rolls with egg wash for a glossy finish or sprinkle with seeds.
  11. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
  12. Cool the rolls for 5 minutes before serving.

Serving Suggestions: Enjoy these rolls with Belizean stewed chicken or as an accompaniment to a fresh potato salad. They pair wonderfully with tropical fruit juices or a nice hot tea.
